Once again the truth tellers are our court jesters. If you don't know about Ann Telnaes, the wonderful editorial cartoonist, her work is being showcased at the Library of Congress.
She is only the second woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for her work. Check out her latest book, Humor's Edge. Samples of her cartoons are found at her eponymous site. I'm sure you've seen her work on the web and elsewhere.
When asked why there are so few women in the world of editorial cartoons, she replied, "it's an aggressive business... You really have to be pushy and forceful, which are characteristics many women prefer not to develop." Sigh. A familiar tale. Well, I think a quick scan of her cartoons will convince you that she has no trouble being edgy, pugnacious, and courageous—clearly a woman after my own heart.
Fortunately the socialization of women is showing itself to be wonderfully diverse. And even by nature some of us are hunters. Thank you Dido, Artemis (Diana), and the lionesses in our midst.
